Senior Unix System Administrator

Onsite

Position Overview: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior UNIX Operations Administrator to join our dynamic IT team. As a Senior UNIX Operations Administrator, you will play a critical role in managing and maintaining the stability, security, and performance of our UNIX-based systems. Your expertise will be pivotal in ensuring smooth operations, implementing best practices, and providing technical leadership to the team. The ideal candidate should possess a deep understanding of UNIX-based environments, exceptional problem-solving abilities, and a passion for optimizing system performance.

Responsibilities:

  • UNIX System Administration: Manage and administer UNIX-based systems, including but not limited to Linux, Solaris, and other UNIX variants, to ensure their availability, reliability, and security.
  • Performance Optimization: Identify opportunities for performance improvements and tune UNIX systems for optimal efficiency, responsiveness, and resource utilization.
  • System Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Monitor system performance, identify potential issues, and proactively address system alerts and incidents. Troubleshoot and resolve complex system and network problems in a timely manner.
  • Security and Compliance: Implement security measures and maintain compliance with industry standards and regulations to safeguard UNIX systems from potential threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Automation and Scripting: Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools to streamline routine tasks, automate system configurations, and improve operational efficiency.
  • System Upgrades and Patch Management: Plan and execute system upgrades, patches, and firmware updates in coordination with change management processes to keep the systems up-to-date and secure.
  • Disaster Recovery and Backup: Design and implement robust disaster recovery plans and backup strategies to ensure business continuity in case of system failures or data loss.
  • Capacity Planning: Analyze system performance trends and forecast future capacity requirements. Recommend and implement upgrades as necessary to meet changing demands.
  • Technical Leadership: Mentor junior team members, share best practices, and provide technical guidance to improve their skills and knowledge.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, network administrators, and other IT staff, to support ongoing projects and deliver seamless solutions.
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive system documentation, including configuration changes, troubleshooting procedures, and operational guidelines.
  • Research and Innovation: Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in UNIX technologies. Identify and propose innovative solutions to enhance the efficiency and security of our UNIX infrastructure.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Proven experience as a UNIX System Administrator or similar role for at least 5-7 years.
  • Expertise in managing UNIX-based operating systems such as Linux and Solaris.
  • Strong knowledge of UNIX shell scripting and automation tools (e.g., Bash, Python, Perl).
  • Solid understanding of system monitoring, performance tuning, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • In-depth knowledge of security best practices and experience implementing security measures on UNIX systems.
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies and cloud platforms is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive and innovative mindset.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Red Hat Certified Engineer, UNIX Administration certifications) will be advantageous.
